Japanese consumer electronics giant Panasonic has launched
two new feature phones in India - the GD21 and GD31. Both the phones are
extremely affordable and cost Rs.1,790 and Rs.2,190 respectively.
While they don't have the bells and whistles of an Android
smartphone, they do offer certain basic amenities. For instance, the GD31
offers a 2.8-inch full touch screen, a Facebook app, Hindi support on the touch
keyboard, a rear camera and a few games offering some smart functionality.
The GD21 is a dual-SIM phone and it offers expandable
memory, a video player and a LED torch light. It also has a rear camera and has
an alpha-numeric keypad, something commonly found on pre-iPhone mobile devices.
Commenting on the launch of the products, Panasonic India MD
Manish Sharma said, "The launch of these two models underscores
Panasonic's efforts in providing a remarkable mobile experience to the Indian
consumers across cities. These models are priced perfectly, matching with our
consumers' need for affordable solutions and thereby empowering the customers
with a wide variety of products to choose from."
Feature phones in the market have never been cheaper. With
the proliferation of low-cost Android and Windows-based smartphones, feature
phones in the market have not only become very affordable, but also have some
smart functionality, which was previously restricted to smartphones.
India, still is a feature phone-oriented market, even though
the smartphone segment is the one which shows maximum growth, so it makes sense
for some upcoming OEMs to focus on the segment to increase market share.
